With Thanksgiving just a week away I was interested in what are your plans for the holiday? Do you celebrate it?
My family does celebrate it but with my parents divorce my father is going to my grandparents for Thanksgiving so it is just going to be my mother and I. So we plan on making a small but yummy dinner of Ham and homemade macaroni and cheese and some other goodies. We will probably just enjoy our small dinner together and enjoy each other's company and we will probably call our relatives who we couldn't be with because they live far away and out of state.
I don't plan on doing any shopping on Thanksgiving. On black Friday I might online shop but I don't intend to fight the ridiculous crowds just for a deal. People can get so serious and rude when they shop on black Friday. Are you planning on any holiday shopping? Got any CBV you are thinking of gifting someone?

What I am most excited about would have to be what comes after dinner. I love eating with my family don't get me wrong but when my Grandmother was little her family would sit down after Thanksgiving dinner and exchange Christmas ornaments. We have always kept the tradition going only we now exchange any Christmas decoration. I always thought it was lame until I moved out and had my very own first Christmas tree. I was living in Germany far away from my family. Just seeing the tree decorated with ornaments that various members of my family had picked out themselves made me feel closer to home. Now some of those members have passed so it's a good way to remember them as your decorating the tree. Kadence loves it as well. Each time she helps hang one she wants to know who bought it and what they were like. My grandmother's family was very poor so most of the ornaments were homemade. I can't have those yet but one day they will be divided up between my sister's and I. It's neat to see what they made ornaments out of back then. There are like 4 or 5 from my Great grandfather that he made. So they would sit after dinner and make ornaments, I wish my family would do that. We let the small kids make one but the adults just buy. Either way, it's so special to me.

We're having thanksgiving at our house with 30 other family members. We may have to set up food tables in the garage LOL. Usually my cousins and i go black Friday shopping afterwards but this year our mall opens at 8 thanksgiving night which pisses me off. Poor people who have to work.

Oooooookay! Back to regular scheduled business I hope... We normally celebrate Thanksgiving at my uncles house (used to be my grandmothers house, long story). Insert some family drama that was fueled by my sons peanut allergy and this will now be the first year we celebrate Thanksgiving with just the people living under my roof (turkey in a crockpot? Maybe...). There always seems to some type of drama in my family and sadly I always seem to be a part of it. Of course my husband may or may not be here because he has an on-call job, with out set days off and he has to work the holidays. Not a complaint, this is just the life we live, spontaneous. Here is a poem I wrote one year probably during a time of family drama. When my days have finally set I'll take my rest with out regret. My time spent in great amount with those I love with those who count. L.C./Disalan The people on this board matter to me and as it can be seen, we have spent in some form, our time together. I want you to know you all mean a lot to me My daughter and I are looking forward to eating lots of candied yams (from a can with added brown sugar and marshmallows). Mashed potatoes believe it or not are not loved by my husband but my girls and I can't get enough. I have a frozen blackberry pie and bought pie crust (don't judge me maybe next year we will bake from scratch) for an apple/pumpkin if we are feeling daring. Since I can remember pickles and black olives have always been a part of pre-dinner snacking. I feel like I have the bases covered for food and we will probably be eating leftovers (yes!) for the next 2 days. I have never and will never participate in Black Friday. Crowds are not my thing and I can't imagine, even after hearing stories how crazy that day will be. I have done a LOT of online Christmas shopping this year which has saved me a ton of time. Be sure if you do shop online look for online coupon codes, retailmenot.com is my go to site. Tomorrow I will be getting a box from CBV, mums the word *wink wink* maybe some Secret Santa goodies and if I am super lucky (fingers, toes, eyes crossed) a GOLDEN TICKET!!! Please oh please oh please,,,,,,,

Shay: That sounds like a wonderful tradition. It is so sweet your grandmother exchanged homemade ornaments and now you guys carry it on to Christmas decorations. We don't have anything like that in my family. Mandy: You are right I too feel sorry for the people who have to work on Thanksgiving instead of spending time with their families. Lisa: It is such a shame that the holidays can sometimes throw us into drama. But a small Thanksgiving can be nice to celebrate. Your poem is really meaningful. I do most my shopping online as well. The nearest mall is close to 45 minutes away and I do not care for crowds even on normal days. I have only gotten a few of my Christmas shopping done though. I still have a long way to go. Giving gifts to the ones you love is important but I'm trying to focus on the true meaning of Christmas this year as well. As I mentioned before I'm just now trying to find my faith so I have been reading my bible and trying to make a change in myself. I think my New Year's Resolution for this year is going to be a better person and to be more forgiving and loving to those I meet. I'm finding I want to be the kind of person people want to come to and can feel loved and accepted with me. I've always tried to be a polite person but in my normal day to day life I kind of close myself off and stay at home and do my own thing. Not that I try to shut people out I just enjoy being alone and so I want to come out of my shell more this year. Everyone here on this board and the time we have spent together I greatly appreciate. I care about all of the people here as well and enjoy coming to this board to see your thoughts and opinions. You guys are always so supportive and kind. So I want you all to know how much I value your presence on this board and I hope that no matter what happens that this board is a safe and fun place for you all to come.

I bet that'll be a great time!! and, I agree stores opening on Thanksgiving day/evening is silly. Let those workers enjoy the holiday with their families and friends.

My Thanksgiving Day/weekend is always crazy busy...
Thanksgiving Day my husband and I will spending the day with my dad and step-mom and one brother (and his family). Then Friday, we will travel to my uncle and aunts in Ohio to have another Thanksgiving dinner with them, my brothers (and families) and cousin (and his family). And on Saturday all of the ladies in the family go shopping while the men stay at home and nap all day. Lol

I hope you get to your destinations safely. Traveling on Thanksgiving can be brutal. It sounds like you guys will have a lot of fun shopping together though. Change of plans maybe on my end we might go shopping on Thanksgiving though I'm not a fan but my mother wants to look at furniture since we will be moving in January.

You might be able to get some great deals on furniture. I hope it wont be to hectic or busy. I am planning the menu for Thanksgiving right now. Even though I have always brought a lot of dishes to Thanksgiving in the past (sometimes I was the only adult "kid" who bring anything at all). I'm sticking to the basics for food, things I usually make. Making a turkey is totally new to me and fingers crossed the crock pot method works. Getting a huge turkey for my small family doesn't make sense. My 15 year daughter Kira is sick and she was going to be my helper in the kitchen . With the turkey in the crock pot leaving the oven free, I still think an apple pie may be doable....wish me luck. If Thanksgiving proves to be a bust at the very least it will be a learning experiencing and I'm sure we will get a few good laughs from it. I hope everyone has safe travels, warm yummy food, stretchy pants, no drama, but most importantly I hope you're not stuck doing the dishes

I hope your daughter feels better in time for Thanksgiving. I'm sure one way or another your Thanksgiving feast will be good. Even if you mess up just having pb&j with your family it is a good meal. So long as you all are together. Apple pie does sound good, though a cobbler might be easier to make. A good safety net though is to get a graham cracker pie crust and then get some instant pudding mix and voila! Instant dessert! Everyone traveling I hope you reach your destinations safely. Especially those who will be traveling through the storm system moving throughout most the eastern states.
